Ubuntu is a great free alternative to Windows!

Ventura IT staff had old computers laying around that needed expensive anti-virus and firewall (like Norton Internet Security) loaded on them.  So we decided to give Ubuntu a try.

This article is being written on an HP Pavilion laptop with Ubuntu 9.04 installed and it works great.  The only problem is that Wireless networking is not as smooth as it should be.  This is a big problem for Ubuntu and other Unix/Linux type desktop platforms like PC-BSD.  They really need to focus more on making Wireless work better!

Some really neat things about Ubuntu are that it displays the time, date, year, weather and temperature in the status bar and allows you to easily switch between many time-zones (locations) in a few seconds, so you can see what time it is in your favorite spots all over the world.  Other cool things are that its free and it has high quality programs for all kinds of uses like photo editing, video editing, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.  It’s system monitor is, in our opinion, much better than Window’s!  Ubuntu is really good!  It even has special graphical features for your desktop and windows that you won’t find in Microsoft Windows.

Ubuntu is even more customizable than Windows allowing you to really personalize your computer to your own preferences.  It’s even possible to make your Ubuntu look and act 99% like a Macintosh.  That’s pretty amazing.

Ventura IT has tested Ubuntu using Firefox to browse popular sites like Youtube, Myspace, Facebook, Meebo, and more.  Everything worked normally.
